So now, in her bed, Mercedes stirred, restless, unsettled, even by just the memory of the way she had felt then. The covers were way too hot, too heavy, and she flung them aside with a muttered curse, not caring that they went right over the other side of the bed and fell in a crumpled heap on the floor.

Somehow she had fought with herself hard enough to hold herself still, though every nerve in her body had screamed an angry protest at the torment she’d been inflicting on it by denying herself in that way. She hadn’t given in to the sensual temptation that had tortured her, and now she could only thank God that she had managed to hold out against it. Because Jake’s next comments had made it only too plain to her just what a fool she would have been to show him anything of the way she’d been feeling.

Because his mind had been on totally practical matters and on the need to maintain the fiction they had created in order to convince her family and friends. There had been nothing erotic or passionate in his thoughts at all.

‘Perhaps you ought to know where I’m staying? It would look a little strange if my supposed fiancée had no idea where to find me after tonight was over—sort of Cinderella in reverse.’

‘Of course,’ she sighed, knowing he was right but wishing he weren’t. ‘Where will you be? What hotel?’

‘No hotel. I’m staying in town. Ramón let me have his apartment while he’s away.’

‘Ramón? Oh—of course—you’re here as his guest. So how do you come to know him? You never mentioned it before.’

‘We’re in the same business,’ Jake hedged. If she realised how well he knew Ramón she might start putting two and two together and she could come up with a four that he just didn’t want her to even consider.

‘And he’s letting you stay in his apartment—for how long?’

‘I’m looking after it while he’s away on honeymoon.’

‘But he and Estrella will be gone for a month!’

‘Then I’ll be living in his flat for that month.’

He couldn’t. Oh, please let it not be true! Let him be joking—making it up!

Too restless to stay still any longer, Mercedes got out of bed and walked to the window, pushing her hand through the long fall of her black silky hair.

She had thought that he would just stay a day or so—three at the very most. That she would only have to endure a few hours of each day playing his fiancée and then he would leave and go back to England and she would be free.

And after that?
